The Waning of Summer….
As we notice Summer’s waning, time seems to stop and the glory of the season hangs as if suspended. This fifth season, known as Late Summer, marks the ascendance of the power of the Earth, the time of ripening when all that has grown and matured lies ready for harvest. Momentarily free of the cycle of birth, growth, and death, this is a secure time of peace and plenty (ideally…) during which we appreciate the flowering of our labor. The Earth element is the ‘binder’ of all the other elements. It is the part of Nature and the part of ourselves which relates to everything and yet keeps the center intact.
The Planet’s density and enormous mass sustain our momentum, keeping us aligned in the direction of our desires. Earth generates the capacity for changing direction without losing balance. It represents our center of gravity, the point of reference around which all other aspects orient themselves.
Our focus at this time of year are forms that focus on the Earth Element and the digestive organs of the Stomach and Spleen/Pancreas. The particular flavor that coincides with this season is sweet. It is sometimes our first resource for “energy.” We crave sweet to help us feel better when tired, but this can lead to metabolic issues. The impact of excess sugar on obesity and diabetes is also well documented. Now we are learning that sugar can also impact heart health. So, continue to read food labels for that hidden culprit.
Organ Hours Stomach: 7 to 9 a.m. – Spleen/Pancreas: 9 to 11 a.m.
Color of the season: golden yellow.
These organs are related to the thinking mind, memory and study. Positive emotions are enthusiasm, practicality, fairness and openness. Negative emotions are worry or dwelling on problems, excess mental work or over-stimulation.
How ever you feel about the change of seasons, simply notice the transition and your response: physical, emotional, and energetic. Perhaps there is sadness – or maybe relief. Our Qigong practice assists in easing us through times of transition – whether that be a season or a life-changing event.
